Context

Photograph documenting Alice G. Carr's anti-malaria campaign at the Corinth Orphanage. Beginning in 1923, Carr organized ninety-two older orphan boys, later joined by two squadrons of soldiers on loan from the Greek military, to drain the swamps surrounding Corinth that bred malaria-carrying mosquitoes. The campaign dug roughly 100 miles of drainage ditches and, combined with Carr's broader sanitation program, eradicated malaria from the orphanage and the surrounding community within a year.
