Context

Issued during the 1918 $30,000,000 appeal, the poster shows an Armenian girl clinging to a Lady Liberty figure who holds a raised sword in her right hand and the American flag in her left. Part of the girl's body is wrapped in the striped portion of the flag — a visual claim that American protection had already been extended and now obligated continued support.

Douglas Volk (1856–1935) was an American portrait and figure painter, founder of the Minneapolis School of Art (now MCAD), and a member of the National Academy of Design. He is among the ten poster artists named in James L. Barton's 1930 Story of Near East Relief. Signed with the artist's monogram in the lower left. Printed by American Lithographic Co., New York.
