Handmade book of stories, poems, and drawings created by Armenian orphan boys of the Sahag-Mesrobian School at Trebizond (Trabzon) and presented to their teachers as a New Year's gift, 1922.

Context

In 1922, a group of Armenian boys - young survivors of the Genocide - at the Sahag-Mesrobian Armenian School in Trebizond, Turkey, created a handmade book as a gift to their teachers. Each boy shared a story, poem, or drawing. The boy with the finest handwriting copied the contributions. An unknown hand added photographs of each boy and one of the group. Young Krikor Der-Vartanian, a talented artist, provided illustrations. The boys called their collaboration New Year’s Gift in honor of the holiday.
