Yarrow surveys winter relief across the Caucasus. New Near East, Feb 1920.
Location
Erivan (Yerevan)
Year
1920
Item Detail
Famine, displacement, and political instability marked the winter of 1920 in the First Republic of Armenia and the wider Caucasus, and damaged transport and supply lines made relief harder to deliver. E. A. Yarrow's report for this issue follows food distribution, refugee camps, warehouses, hospitals, and orphanages from Nakhichevan to Erivan, Alexandropol, Kars, and Tiflis. The issue also reports starvation at Erivan, devastation at Urumia, an attack that killed two American YMCA workers near Aintab, and the national fundraising campaign.
Context
The New Near East was Near East Relief's monthly publication that reported on the organization’s work and mobilized financial support from American readers. Its articles preserve evidence of field conditions and institutional decisions, but they frame that evidence through Near East Relief’s own appeals for support.
