Context

A. Gertrude Anthony (1873–1967), niece of the suffragist Susan B. Anthony, served with Near East Relief from 1919 to 1923 and directed the boys' orphanage at Marsovan (Merzifon). Her sister Amy served with the same organization and ran the Kuleli Orphan School at Constantinople (Istanbul). These photographs record the boys of Kuleli at drill and at games, lined up in the courtyard and playing basketball within its walls. Both sisters spent these years among children the relief effort had drawn back from the deportation routes and the orphan camps.
