Context

A. Gertrude Anthony (1873–1967), niece of the suffragist Susan B. Anthony, served with Near East Relief from 1919 to 1923 and directed the boys' orphanage at Marsovan (Merzifon). Her photographs also include scenes of children and the women who cared for them at Near East Relief sites the collection does not identify. These images show young children, their caregivers, and assembled groups in gardens and courtyards. Near East Relief sheltered Armenian and Greek children orphaned by the genocides, and the children in these frames were among those in its care. The site of these photographs remains unidentified.
