Excerpts from the 1921–1922 diary of Dr. Mark H. Ward, NER physician at Harpoot, recording the Greek deportation convoys he observed before his own expulsion.
Context
Dr. Mark H. Ward served as a Near East Relief physician in the Harpoot (Kharpert) unit until Nationalist authorities expelled the American staff in March 1922. He observed the Greek deportation convoys moving through Mamuret-ul-Aziz at first hand and later set down his observations in the pamphlet Deportations in Asia Minor; this diary is the contemporaneous record behind that account.
The excerpts document day-to-day conditions along the deportation routes around Harpoot — the penniless state of the deportees, the toll of exposure and hunger — in the same period covered by the Yowell report and Ward’s own supplementary statement to the State Department.
