Wirt-Carrier Photographs (1919)

Glen Russell Carrier, an American photographer, accompanied Dr. Loyal Lincoln Wirt (1863–1961) on a Near East Relief field survey across Cilicia and northern Syria in 1919, in the immediate aftermath of the Armenian Genocide and World War I. Wirt, serving as NER’s International Commissioner, was dispatched to assess the needs of Armenian refugees and report on the progress of relief operations. The photographs document a structured assessment of displacement, destruction, and NER relief capacity along the inland corridor from the Mediterranean coast through Beirut, Aleppo, Aintab (Gaziantep), Marash (Kahramanmaras), Damascus, Jerusalem, and Port Said.

This selection presents photographs from the survey: refugee camps, destroyed Armenian quarters, orphanages, NER personnel, and the Allied military presence across multiple sites. Titles are reproduced from the period records; period language has been preserved.

Carrier later became a Hollywood cinematographer; his professional eye produced some of the most technically accomplished field photography in the NER archive. The full collection of 487 photographs is held at the Harvard Fine Arts Library.
