Jay H. Robinson was at Constantinople (Istanbul) in November 1920 when General Wrangel's White Russian army collapsed in the Crimea and was evacuated by sea. Roughly a hundred and fifty thousand Russian soldiers and civilians reached the city inside a week, with no government willing to claim them and nowhere to put them.
Robinson worked day and night through that emergency. He handed out food and cared for the sick and the wounded, and was repeatedly exposed to the cold. He developed pneumonia and died in the American hospital in Constantinople on 10 December 1920. He was buried in the Ferikeuy Cemetery in the city.
