While the Orphanages collection documents where NER’s children lived, this collection documents how they lived. NER grew from an emergency relief operation into a comprehensive child welfare system, providing education, medical care, vocational training, music instruction, recreation, and regular meals to tens of thousands of children simultaneously. The images here are organized by aspect of daily life: classrooms and workshops, clinics and hospitals, dining halls and kitchens, choirs and bands, playgrounds and sports fields. Together they show that NER’s ambition extended beyond shelter and survival — the organization sought to raise a generation of children equipped to build independent lives after displacement.
